I've tried reinstalling the whole thing a bunch of times, updating directX and the graphics card driver, but it still crashes right after the loading screen.
The client worked perfectly fine before the patch.

If its after a patch then maybe reinstall Dreamlords.
Generally
Update video drivers
Update Direct X
Reinstall game
update sound drivers
update other drivers

have you got the right parameters for this server? (its language=en behind the dreamlords.exe)

just add -conntest to your dreamlords.exe parameter and start.
please post the result.
